On everyone's bucket list.

Stelvio Pass.

The Stelvio Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2,757 m (9,045 feet) above the sea level, located in the Ortler Alps in Italy between Stilfs in South Tyrol and Bormio in the province of Sondrio. It's one of the highest mountain roads of Europe. The road itself is a marvel of engineering skill; the exhilarating serpentine sections ask to be driven by experienced drivers for their own sakes. All in all, this could be the most magnificent road pass in Europe. It's one of the most scenic drives in the world. It is highest in Eastern Alps. Around 48 hairpin bends in total.

There of stories of the legendary Stirling Moss crashing on this in the early 1990's. he drove a famous Sunbeam in 1953 on the Alpine Rally.

I recommend to do the reverse of the 'Top Gear' team when they drove in 2007 from Davos to Stelvio.

Other top passes

Umbrail Pass is a high mountain pass at 2.501 m (8,205 ft) above the sea level, located in the Alps, on the Swiss-Italian border. At this elevation the road over the pass is currently the highest paved road in Switzerland, and one of the highest mountain passes of the Alps.

Lastly, and I cannot fit this into the routing unfortunately because its in the Piedmont region, but has to be listed because of its history and Michael Caine connection.

Colle de Novolette is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2,641 metres (8,665 feet) above sea level located in the eastern group of the Graian Alps in Italy. The pass is traversed by the road SP50 and it was the location of several scenes in The Italian Job, including the final bus crash. It's one of highest mountain passes in Italy.

I have recently found the opening section to the film that shows off the Great St Bernard Pass, beautifully. Well worth a revisit. I also noted Quincy Jones did the music….. More detective work I found a video of the actual Lambo used in the opening scene in a garage in Cheshire having a tune! The video explains two cars used in the sequence. This one and previously crashed car that was used in the digger sequence!

The Sella Pass in the Dolomites is another favourite worthy of consideration.

I've added in Sicily now famous of course for the Targa Florio, Porsche choose this venue for its 718 GTS launch. So picked a couple of good videos to show off the bends.

The mountain roads through the Alps represent some of the great engineering marvels in architectural history. Constructed along dizzying precipices and craggy inclines, the hairpin bends twist these roads all the way up to the icy mountain tops, not only linking countries and cultures but also offering unparalleled views and spectacular adventures.

TOP Gear defines Italy's Stelvio Pass:: "One of the World's greatest roads". The original "Italian Job" movie, sporting a gorgeous Lamborghini Miura and featuring an memorable intro by English singer Matt Monro, with music by Quincy Jones and lyrics by Don Black, perfectly encompasses one of Italy's most beautiful locations.

Driving the Stelvio Pass with a Audi RS6 and a Porsche 911 4S (991). Weather was perfect. Not much cyclist and motorbikes on the road. If you wonder why we honk in the tunnels, we just wanted to make sure that incoming traffic knows we're in the tunnel.

Gavia Pass is a high mountain pass in the Italian Alps. It is the tenth highest paved road in the Alps. The pass lies in the Lombardy region and divides the province of Sondrio to the north and the province of Brescia to the south.
